 Zoobia Shahnaz, 27, of Brentwood, New York, pleaded guilty to providing material support to the Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham (ISIS), a designated foreign terrorist organization.

According to court filings and facts presented at the plea hearing, between March 2017 and the date of her attempted travel to Syria on July 31, 2017, the defendant engaged in a scheme to defraud numerous financial institutions.

Specifically, Shahnaz obtained a loan for approximately $22,500 by way of materially pretenses, representations, and promises. She also fraudulently applied for and used over a dozen credit cards, which she used to purchase approximately $62,000 in Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies online. She then engaged in a pattern of financial activity, culminating in several wire transactions totaling over $150,000 to individuals and shell entities in Pakistan, China, and Turkey that were fronts for ISIS. During the time she was committing bank fraud and laundering money overseas, the defendant was accessing ISIS propaganda online, including violent jihad-related websites and message boards, and social media and messaging pages of known ISIS recruiters, facilitators and financiers.

The international human rights watchdog Human Rights Watch (HRW) and Argentine federal judge are currently assessing the crown prince Mohammed Bin Salman role in connection with alleged war crimes by the Saudi-led coalition in Yemen and his possible complicity in the alleged torture of Saudi nationals, including Jamal Khashoggi.

Prince Salman is expected to attend a G20 summit in Buenos Aires later this week. Argentine law gives the country’s judiciary the right to investigate war crimes and torture on a global basis, opening the way for nationals of other countries to be tried for such crimes upon entering the country.

Four individuals were indicted  following an investigation by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s (ICE) Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), as David Jones, David Duwayne Taylor, Kristin Knight, and Destiny Bishop are charged for their alleged involvement in a scheme by which they fraudulently duped their victims into believing that they had sent sexually explicit images to underage children and faced criminal prosecution if they did not pay to avoid involvement by law enforcement.

Taylor, Knight, and Bishop were presented in federal court in South Carolina on October 18 and 19, 2018. Bishop was filed Oct. 26 and Knight was recorded Oct. 29 in White Plains federal court. Both were released on a personal recognizance bond. Jones was presented Wednesday. Taylor is expected to appear in federal court in White Plains in the next several days.

“These individuals allegedly chose their targets specifically to create vulnerabilities, seeking simply to make a profit through deceit and extortion,” said Angel M. Melendez, special agent in charge of HSI New York. “Anyone can fall victim to a criminal scheme, so it is important to remain diligent in text messaging and online communications, and to contact law enforcement if criminal activity is suspected.”

“As alleged, these defendants scared their victims into sending them money by fraudulently convincing them they were in peril of criminal prosecution for child exploitation. This alleged fraud was not only cruel, but it was also profitable for the defendants – until they were arrested,” stated U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of New York, Geoffrey S. Berman.

A federal grand jury sitting in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Pennsylvania charged a Pennsylvania man with federal hate crimes, including the murder of 11 people, for his actions during the Oct. 27, 2018 shootings at the Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh’s Squirrel Hill neighborhood.

Robert Bowers, 46, of Baldwin, Pa., was charged in a 44-count indictment returned today,  for driving to the Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, entering the building armed with multiple firearms, including Glock .357 handguns a Colt AR-15 rifle, and opening fire, killing and injuring members of the three congregations, as well as injuring multiple responding public safety officers. While inside the Tree of Life Synagogue, Bowers made statements indicating his desire to “kill Jews.”.

“Hatred and violence by religion can have no place in our society,” Attorney General Jeff Sessions said.

“Every American has the right to attend their house of worship in safety. The defendant in this case allegedly murdered 11 innocent people during religious services and injured four law enforcement officers. These alleged crimes are incomprehensibly evil and utterly alien to the values of this nation. Therefore this case is not only important to the victims and their loved ones, but to the city of Pittsburgh and the entire nation. I want to express my thanks and admiration for the courage and professionalism of those officers who so quickly responded to this event, and especially to those that suffered wounds in the process. Our thanks are also extended to the Pittsburgh Bureau of Police, the FBI, and the ATF for their outstanding response to this violent and deadly attack. The Department of Justice, working with our state and local partners, will bring the full force of the law against anyone who would violate the civil rights of the American people and we are firmly determined to achieve justice in this case.”

President  Trump says the number of military troops deployed to the US-Mexican border could reach 15,000 — roughly double the amount the Pentagon says it currently plans for a mission where the dimensions are shifting daily.

A caravan of an estimated 4,000 Central American migrants is about 1,600km from the US border, and Mr. Trump did not back down from his proposal to upend the rights of babies born in the US to non-citizens.

The Pentagon said “more than 7,000” troops were being sent to the south-west border to support the Customs and Border Protection agents, and officials said that number could reach a maximum of about 8,000 under present plans.

On the outskirts of the southern port city of Aden, a large number of forcibly displaced people who fled war-torn areas in the Red Sea coastal city of Hodeidah are struggling to stay alive in a desert area without basic services such as water and electricity, preparing themselves for winter in huts and tents, praying for someone sending them basic necessities for normal life.

Adeeb Omar, a displaced civilian from Hodeidah, told Xinhua that new difficulties will emerge for thousands of displaced people during winter, as storms and cold have just started to hit their huts.

“Winter will be an unwelcome visitor because we are unable to confront cold nights in a desert area free from basic living means,” Omar said.

“The already hungry children and the elderly people who barely survived during the past period” will be the most vulnerable, he added.

Eight New Orleans, Louisiana-area defendants have pleaded guilty for their participation in a conspiracy to obtain oxycodone through fraud by using fictitious prescriptions.  Six of the eight defendants have also pleaded guilty for the roles in a scheme to possess with intent to distribute oxycodone on the black market. 

Jesse J. Wildenfels, 39, of Metairie, Louisiana, pleaded guilty today to a dual-object conspiracy to acquire and obtain possession of oxycodone by fraud and to possess oxycodone with the intent to distribute.  On Oct. 17, Luis R. Cabrera Jr., 38, of Norco, Louisiana; Vicki J. Skeldon, 44, of Metairie; Stephanie N. Free, 28, of Gretna, Louisiana; Jarrod A. Doubleday, 47, of Livingston, Louisiana; John A. Doubleday, 52, of Place, Louisiana; Whitney J. Swan III, 48, of Saint Rose, Louisiana; and Cynthia B. Foret, 41, also of Norco, pleaded guilty to their roles in violating the Controlled Substances Act.  Cabrera, Skeldon, Free, John Doubleday and Swan pleaded guilty to a dual-object conspiracy to acquire and obtain possession of oxycodone by fraud and to possess oxycodone with the intent to distribute.  Jarrod Doubleday and Foret pleaded guilty to conspiracy to obtain possession of oxycodone by fraud.                                      

“These defendants were responsible for over 10,000 Oxycodone pills flowing onto the streets in and around New Orleans,” said Assistant Attorney General Benczkowski.  “I commend the prosecutors in the Medicare Fraud Strike Force and the U.S. Attorney’s Office, along with our law enforcement partners, for their outstanding efforts to disrupt the illegal sale of opioids on the black market.”

“The proliferation of illegally obtained opioids flooding our community has made a significant contribution to the abuse of prescription drugs which plagues many families,” said U.S. Attorney Strasser.  “Cases such as this shows the commitment DOJ has to our community by combating this growing threat.” 

“Driven by greed and addiction, these eight defendants manipulated a system established to assist patients with legitimate medical conditions,” said FBI Special Agent in Charge Rommal.  “Through their illicit gains, these defendants contributed to the daily oxycodone epidemic taking this nation by storm. By removing these defendants from our streets and communities, the FBI, in conjunction with our federal, state, and local law enforcement partners were able to take the drugs out of an addict’s hands and hopefully save a life or two.”

“The eight individuals involved in this scheme heartlessly contributed to the opioid epidemic plaguing our society today,” said DEA Special Agent in Charge Azzam.  “This malicious conduct puts lives at risk and won’t be tolerated.  DEA, along with our law enforcement partners, will continue to aggressively pursue those who seek to perpetuate and profit from the opioid crisis in this country and bring them to justice.”

The charges stem from the defendants’ involvement in a prescription drug diversion conspiracy in the greater New Orleans area.  The conspiracy in total resulted in the diversion of approximately 10,000 oxycodone pills on the black market. 

In pleading guilty, Cabrera, Skeldon, Free, John Doubleday, Swan and Wildenfels admitted that, between February 2017 and June 2018, they either provided their personal identifying information for the purpose of having fictitious prescriptions for oxycodone created in their names or referred co-conspirators for the purpose of having fictitious prescriptions for oxycodone written in their co-conspirators’ names.  The prescriptions were then filled at area pharmacies and a portion of oxycodone pills obtained with those prescriptions were subsequently sold on the black market.  Additionally, in pleading guilty, Jarrod Doubleday admitted to filling fictitious prescriptions for oxycodone in his own name between April 2017 and May 2017.  And, in pleading guilty, Foret admitted to forging prescriptions for oxycodone in her own name and in the name of her co-conspirators between February 2015 and October 2016, which were ultimately filled.
