Daniel Jenkins, 20, and Daryl Henry, 22, were charged by a federal grand jury in a superseding indictment unsealed yesterday with conspiracy to commit hate crimes, kidnapping, and carjacking, announced Assistant Attorney General Eric Dreiband of the Department of Justice’s Civil Rights Division.

According to the 15 count indictment—which supersedes a previously filed indictment—members of the conspiracy used Grindr, a dating app for LGBT people, to create fake profiles and pose as gay men interested in “dates” to lure gay men to an apartment complex in Dallas, Texas, in order to commit violent crimes against them, including kidnapping, assault, robbery, and carjacking.

 Members of the conspiracy forced the victims at gunpoint to relinquish their possessions, including their wallets, money, car keys, cars, drivers’ licenses and identification cards, credit and debit cards, and cellular telephones.

 If convicted, both defendants face a maximum statutory penalty of life in prison for the hate crime and kidnapping charges, five years for the conspiracy charge, and a fine of up to $250,000 with respect to each charge.

 The indictment charges both Jenkins and Henry with kidnapping these four victims and Jenkins with kidnapping two additional victims, carjacking two victims, and using a firearm in connection with the carjackings.

President Trump says the United States will impose a 5 per cent tariff on all goods coming from Mexico, starting on June 10, until illegal immigration across the southern border is stopped, with the levies increasing by 5 per cent every month until reaching 25 per cent in October, all this action due to the Mexican Government failure to crack down on migrants deluge.

“The Tariff will gradually increase until the Illegal Immigration problem is remedied, at which time the Tariffs will be removed,” Mr. Trump said on Twitter.

“Tariffs will permanently remain at the 25 per cent level unless and until Mexico substantially stops the illegal inflow of aliens coming through its territory,” the statement read.

“Mexico’s passive cooperation in allowing this mass incursion constitutes an emergency and extraordinary threat to the national security and economy of the United States,” Mr. Trump said in the statement.

“Mexico has very strong immigration laws and could easily halt the illegal flow of migrants, including by returning them to their home countries.”

“I’m pleased to announce that we’ve just reached an agreement with Canada and Mexico, and we’ll be selling our product into those countries without the imposition of tariffs, or major tariffs,” Mr. Trump said in a speech to the National Association of Realtors.   

US and Canada agreed to work to prevent cheap imports of steel and aluminum from entering North America, but the new trade deal needs approval from legislatures in the US, Canada and Mexico, while the Washington hawks are urging Mr Trump to get tougher on tariffs with China.

By removing the metals tariffs on Canada and Mexico, Mr Trump cleared a key hurdle to a North American trade pact his team negotiated last year.

In imposing the metals tariffs and threatening the ones on autos, the President was relying on a rarely used weapon in the US trade war arsenal – Section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act of 1962 – which lets a president impose tariffs on imports if the Commerce Department deems them a threat to national security.

ICE officers with the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO) Baltimore Field Office concluded a four-day surge enforcement action netting 12 arrests, with all individuals arrested for violating U.S. immigration laws in accordance with the Immigration and Nationality Act. Those targeted for arrest had been issued final orders of removal within the past five years and had criminal histories or pending criminal charges.

“Today’s announcement reflects the agency’s commitment to enforcing our immigration laws in an orderly and logical manner as we experience increasing strain on our limited resources,” said Baltimore Field Office Director (FOD) Diane Witte.

“The illegal aliens targeted for arrest today came to the attention of our fugitive operations teams by way of the criminal justice system, and by nature of their outstanding orders of removal.”

The arrestees (11 men, one woman) included nationals from the following six countries: El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Kenya, Mexico and Zimbabwe.

ICE conducts targeted immigration enforcement in compliance with federal law and agency policy.

US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) arrested 13 immigration violators in New Jersey during a 4-day surge effort that targeted aliens who have been issued a final order of removal in the past five years, have failed to depart the United States, and have received criminal convictions or have pending criminal charges.

 “The vast majority of the individuals targeted in this effort have criminal offenses in addition to their immigration violations, making them among the highest priority for enforcement,” ICE  said.

 Those who have outstanding orders of removal, or who returned to the United States illegally after being removed, are generally subject to immediate removal from the country.

In FY2018, ERO arrested 158,581 aliens, 90% of whom had criminal convictions (66%), pending criminal charges (21%), or previously issued final orders of removal (3%).

“As this operation clearly demonstrates, ICE continues to focus its efforts first on public safety threats,” said ERO Newark Field Office Director John Tsoukaris.

More than 40 US states have filed a lawsuit accusing pharmaceutical firms of conspiring to artificially inflate the cost of common medicinal drugs, alleging that as many as 20 companies have been involved in fixing prices for over 100 drugs, including treatments for diabetes and cancer, with Teva Pharmaceuticals, the world’s largest producer of generic medicine, on the top of the defenders list.

The legal action, which follows a five-year investigation, accuses drugs companies of involvement in a scheme to boost prices – in some cases by more than 1,000% – and was filed on Friday by Connecticut Attorney General William Tong.

“We have hard evidence that shows the generic drug industry perpetrated a multi-billion dollar fraud on the American people,” Mr Tong said.
