After Italy reported 97 deaths overnight, bringing the national toll to 463, the whole country told to ‘stay at home’ because of COVI-19 risk, with movement sharply restricted in a dramatic new clampdown aimed at halting the spread of the corona-virus, Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte said.
Italians are to stay at home, will only be able to travel for work, medical reasons or emergencies until April 3, since the measures introduced just two days ago in much of the north were no longer enough.
The national number of cases is now 9,172, up by more than 1,800, according to Italian health officials.
Giorgio Gori, the Mayor of the city of Bergamo near Milan, said the COVI-19 outbreak was stretching the Italian medical system to breaking point.
Seven inmates died during riots at prisons across Italy, after authorities suspended all visits as part of attempts to control the spread of COVI-19, the trouble began in the northern city of Modena after inmates at the Sant’Anna prison were told visitors were no longer allowed, three people died at the prison, with another four dying after being transferred to other institutions, and some died from overdoses of drugs they had stolen from prison clinics.
