High tension and disarray among the Republican Party over how to respond to the continuing COVID-19 pandemic is the rule, and the exception, with some Republicans criticizing the bill’s $1 trillion price tag as too high amid the increasing national debt. The stimulus package will include another round of direct checks to taxpayers, limited assistance to schools and reduced supplemental unemployment benefits, but the bill does not include fiscal assistance for state or local governments or any relief for renters who face eviction.

Agents from the Special Response Team of the US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) have been deployed to Seattle, Washington, under orders from President Trump:
“FPS routinely requests mutual assistance from other law enforcement agencies when there are threats to federal properties. The CBP team will be on standby in the area, should they be required,” Federal Protective Service (FPS) declared just a day after President Trump announced Operation Legend, which according to US Attorney General Bill Barr, “aims to immediately help our police agencies and our local leadership to prevent additional victims” of gun violence and other crimes.
Prior to the Seattle announcement, the initiative brought about the deployment of federal police to Chicago, Illinois; Albuquerque, New Mexico; and Portland, Oregon, an action decried by Democratic Mayor of Seattle Jenny Durkan, who said that “any deployment” to her city would “undermine public safety.”
Department of Homeland Security spokesperson Alexei Woltornist clarified to the outlet on Thursday that “there is no large-scale deployment of personnel to Seattle at this time.”
“As threats warrant, any large-scale use of law enforcement assets will involve close coordination with local law enforcement,” he said in a statement.
“There are no other cities across the country that have the same threats and lack of local law enforcement support as we are experiencing in Portland.”

COVID-19 victims with high levels of lung inflammation who received steroids, anti-inflammatory medicines used to treat a range of conditions, were 75% less likely to require ventilator support to maintain oxygen levels in their body, according to a research study by the Albert Einstein College of Medicine and the Montefiore Health System, involving 1,806 hospitalized pandemic patients, with 140 patients being treated with steroids within 48 hours of admission.
Most of the patients treated with steroids received prednisone, but some received dexamethasone and methylprednisolone.
“Our findings suggest that steroid therapy should be reserved for people with high inflammation, as indicated by markedly elevated CRP levels,” said Dr. William Southern, who was also involved in the study.
“It’s a different story for people who do not have significant inflammation: for them, any benefit is outweighed by the risks from using steroids,” he added.
