Joseph P. Galichia M.D., a Wichita, Kansas, cardiologist, has agreed to pay $5.8 million to resolve allegations that he and his medical group, Galichia Medical Group, P.A. (GMED), violated the False Claims Act by improperly billing federal health care programs for medically unnecessary cardiac stent procedures, the Department of Justice announced. Galichia also agreed to a three-year period of exclusion from participation in any federal health care program. The settlement relates to a lawsuit in which the United States intervened on Dec. 12, 2014.

“This settlement reflects the Department of Justice’s commitment to ensuring the safety of federal health care program beneficiaries and that taxpayer monies are properly spent,” said Assistant Attorney General Jody Hunt of the Department of Justice’s Civil Division.

“Patient safety is critically important,” said U.S. Attorney Stephen McAllister for the District of Kansas. “Performing medically unnecessary procedures puts patients at risk and defrauds federal health care programs.”

“When a physician bills the government for medically unnecessary procedures, both patients’ health and taxpayers can end up paying the price,” said Special Agent in Charge Steve Hanson of the Office of Inspector General for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

“OIG is excluding Dr. Galichia from participation in Medicare, Medicaid, and other federal health care programs, and we will continue to work with our partners to protect the health and welfare of Medicare beneficiaries.”

Khristal Ford, 32, a former Lieutenant at the Federal Correctional Complex (FCC) in Beaumont, Texas, pleaded guilty today to aiding and abetting another correctional officer in his assault on an inmate.

According to the plea documents and information presented in court, Khristal Ford was a supervisory correctional officer at the FCC on June 8, 2017, when Ford opened the door of a medical observation cell where A.A., an inmate, was being held. Ford then told a senior correctional officer to “take care of it” and watched as the officer entered the cell and punched A.A. in the head three times without justification. Following this assault, Ford submitted a written memorandum that omitted any reference to the punches and included a falsified breathalyzer photo sheet, all in an effort to conceal the incident and make it appear as if the victim was highly intoxicated at the time of the officer’s assault.

“This type of behavior in our correctional officers erodes public trust,” said Assistant Attorney General Eric Dreiband of the Civil Rights Division.

“The Department of Justice will vigorously prosecute those who violate the civil rights of inmates.”

“When correctional officers abuse their authority like this, it hurts more than the victim of the assault,” said U.S. Attorney Joseph Brown of the Eastern District of Texas.

“It damages the whole system, hurting the credibility of the good officers who try to do the right thing every day. We will do everything we can to make sure these kinds of violations are prosecuted.”

Ford will be sentenced at a later date and faces a maximum statutory penalty of 10 years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000.

President Donald J. Trump invited Democrat leaders Sen. Chuck Schumer and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to the White House today to discuss a bipartisan solution to fixing America’s crumbling infrastructure. Congressional Democrats had other plans.

Far-left activists, both inside Congress and out, have made it clear they don’t want Democrats to work with President Trump to help govern. So before coming to the White House this morning, Speaker Pelosi changed her tune. Rather than talk about an opportunity for bipartisan leadership, she played to the party donors and base, lobbing a fresh conspiracy theory: “The President of the United States is engaged in a cover-up.”

Congressional Democrats spent more than $35 million on the Mueller report. It took 675 days, included nearly 3,000 subpoenas, and required 500 witness accounts. Despite being conducted by a far-from-unbiased legal team—one that has collectively donated at least 20 times more to Democrat as Republican candidates over the years—it found zero evidence of collusion or obstruction of justice. No charges were recommended for either.

There is no legal case against the President, in other words. All Democrats have left is a political one. In a democracy, that’s what elections are for. Democrat leaders might know this, but they’re powerless: Their activist base doesn’t want voters to have the last say.

The result is a string of stunts like the one Americans saw today. Speaker Pelosi and Sen. Schumer know they have to keep giving lip service to the real issues that working Americans care about—tax relief, jobs, high prescription drug prices, immigration, and so on—while only delivering on the agenda their base wants: obstruction and resistance.

President Trump wants bipartisan compromise because it’s the right thing to do for our country. Fortunately, he’s getting results either way. Today, 7 in 10 Americans rate the economy as good or very good. Of those, 85 percent say some or most of the credit goes to President Trump. Pay growth has “picked up sharply at the bottom half of the wage distribution,” a new report says, showing that working-class families are the ones seeing the biggest gains.

Those amazing results could be even better if Congressional Democrats chose to work with the President. And for that reason alone, it’s no surprise that they won’t.

By removing the metals tariffs on Canada and Mexico, Mr Trump cleared a key hurdle to a North American trade pact his team negotiated last year.

ICE officers with the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO) Baltimore Field Office concluded a four-day surge enforcement action netting 12 arrests, with all individuals arrested for violating U.S. immigration laws in accordance with the Immigration and Nationality Act. Those targeted for arrest had been issued final orders of removal within the past five years and had criminal histories or pending criminal charges.

“Today’s announcement reflects the agency’s commitment to enforcing our immigration laws in an orderly and logical manner as we experience increasing strain on our limited resources,” said Baltimore Field Office Director (FOD) Diane Witte.

“The illegal aliens targeted for arrest today came to the attention of our fugitive operations teams by way of the criminal justice system, and by nature of their outstanding orders of removal.”

The arrestees (11 men, one woman) included nationals from the following six countries: El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Kenya, Mexico and Zimbabwe.

ICE conducts targeted immigration enforcement in compliance with federal law and agency policy.

US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) arrested 13 immigration violators in New Jersey during a 4-day surge effort that targeted aliens who have been issued a final order of removal in the past five years, have failed to depart the United States, and have received criminal convictions or have pending criminal charges.

“The vast majority of the individuals targeted in this effort have criminal offenses in addition to their immigration violations, making them among the highest priority for enforcement,” ICE said.

Those who have outstanding orders of removal, or who returned to the United States illegally after being removed, are generally subject to immediate removal from the country.

In FY2018, ERO arrested 158,581 aliens, 90% of whom had criminal convictions (66%), pending criminal charges (21%), or previously issued final orders of removal (3%).

“As this operation clearly demonstrates, ICE continues to focus its efforts first on public safety threats,” said ERO Newark Field Office Director John Tsoukaris.
