Global markets tumbled, led by Wall Street’s benchmark index, the S&P 500, down 2.4%, Dow Jones down 1,200 points over the last week, sell-off triggered by China retaliating with further tariffs against US imports, stoking fears that the world’s two largest economies are spiraling into a no-holds-barred dispute that could derail the global economy.
The finance ministry of China said it would set import tariffs — ranging from 5 to 25 per cent — on $US60 billion worth of US goods, including frozen vegetables and liquefied natural gas, which will take effect on June 1.
“China’s adjustment on additional tariffs is a response to US unilateralism and protectionism,” the ministry said.
“China hopes the US will get back to the right track of bilateral trade and economic consultations and meet with China halfway.”

Unknown hackers installed remotely surveillance software on phones and other devices using a major vulnerability in messaging app WhatsApp, owned by Facebook, attacking a “select number” of users, and was orchestrated by “an advanced cyber actor”, attack allegedly a brain child of Israeli security firm NSO Group.
In response WhatsApp urged all of its 1.5bn users to update their apps as an added precaution, with the attackers using App’s voice calling function to ring a target’s device, even if the call was not picked up, the surveillance software would be installed, and the call would often disappear from the device’s call log.
“The attack has all the hallmarks of a private company reportedly that works with governments to deliver spyware that takes over the functions of mobile phone operating systems,” the company said.

Fifty people are now in law enforcement custody following last week’s return of a 206-count indictment criminally charging 96 people for their alleged roles in a large-scale marriage fraud scheme.
These criminal charges include: 47 counts of marriage fraud, 50 counts of mail fraud; 51 counts of immigration fraud; 51 counts of false statements under oath in a matter relating to registry of aliens; and one count each of conspiracy to engage in marriage fraud, conspiracy to commit mail fraud, conspiracy to commit immigration fraud, conspiracy to make false statements under oath in a matter relating to registry of aliens, unlawful procurement of naturalization, obstructing and impeding the due administration of justice, and tampering with a witness, victim or informant.
This criminal organization also allegedly prepared fake wedding albums which were provided to the petitioner and beneficiary spouse that included photographs to make it appear as if they had a wedding ceremony above and beyond a simple courthouse marriage.
“These arrests mark the culmination of a comprehensive yearlong multi-agency investigation into one of the largest alleged marriage fraud conspiracies ever documented in the Houston area,” said Special Agent in Charge Mark Dawson, HSI Houston.
