A large conch shell, found during the 1931 excavation of a cave with prehistoric wall paintings in the French Pyrenees, and all this time assumed to be a ceremonial drinking cup, overlooked in a museum for decades, is now thought to be the oldest known seashell instrument — still working, producing a deep tone, like a foghorn from the distant past.
“Hearing it for the first time, for me it was a big emotion — and a big stress,” said archaeologist Carole Fritz.
The researchers estimate it to be around 18,000 years old. Their findings were published Wednesday in the journal Science Advances.

The current shutdown began in November and it was extended and hardened before Christmas, with the number of COVID-19 patients threatening to overwhelm hospitals, but a draft statement stated that Germany had made progress in curbing the rate of infection, with Saxony State Premier Michael Kretschmer said the relaxation of restrictions would be discussed when the seven-day case index drops below 35 cases per 100,000:
“We will talk about that in March. Everyone should remain cautious: We don’t want to be careless,” Kretschmer said.
