Department of Justice Spokesperson Kerri Kupec has issued the following statement:
“This morning, Wesley Ira Purkey was executed at USP Terre Haute in accordance with the death sentence imposed by a federal district court in 2004. Purkey was pronounced dead at 8:19 a.m. EDT by the Vigo County Coroner.
Purkey violently raped and murdered 16-year-old Jennifer Long, and then dismembered, burned, and dumped the young girl’s body in a septic pond. He also was convicted in state court for using a claw hammer to bludgeon to death 80-year-old Mary Ruth Bales. On November 5, 2003, a jury in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Missouri found Purkey guilty of kidnapping a child resulting in death, and he was sentenced to death on January 23, 2004.
After many years of litigation following the death of his victims, in which he lived and was afforded every due process of law under our Constitution, Purkey has finally faced justice. The death penalty has been upheld by the federal courts, supported on a bipartisan basis by Congress, and approved by Attorneys General under both Democratic and Republican administrations as the appropriate sentence for the most egregious federal crimes. Today that just punishment has been carried out.”

President Trump replaced his campaign manager Brad Parscale with veteran Republican operative Bill Stepien, in a sign of beginning shak-up after indications that his re-election campaign is being bombarded with sinking poll numbers, despite rumors that former personal friend and strategist Steve Bannon may be considered as a possible replacement campaign manager.
Mr. Trump announced the move on Facebook at around the same time as Twitter was preventing some verified accounts from tweeting due to a hack targeting prominent users:
“I am pleased to announce that Bill Stepien has been promoted to the role of Trump Campaign Manager,” he said.
“Brad Parscale, who has been with me for a very long time and has led our tremendous digital and data strategies, will remain in that role, while being a Senior Advisor to the campaign.”

Currently, the CDC’s web page on available hospital and ICU beds includes a note that reads: “Data displayed on this page was submitted directly to CDC’s National Healthcare Safety Network (NHSN) and does not include data submitted to other entities contracted by or within the federal government,” forcing the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) to redirect the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) website to republish COVID-19 hospital data, after it was temporarily removed earlier in the day at the Trump administration’s urging. HHS spokesperson Michael Caputo told CNBC hours later that the HHS “directed CDC to re-establish the coronavirus dashboards it withdrew from the public on Wednesday” because the HHS is “committed to being transparent with the American public about the information it is collecting on the coronavirus.”
Caputo also noted that the HHS department will be able to provide “more powerful insights” than the CDC.
