Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) Yuma special agents arrested Angel Leon-Camberos, 26, and seized 527.3 lbs. of methamphetamine (approximate street value of nearly $7.2 million), 14.88 lbs. of high grade marijuana and numerous wax (marijuana extract) products with an approximate street value of $103,930, one AR-15 style rifle, one magazine, packaging materials, multiple cell phones and $15,295 in cash in a targeted enforcement action lead by HSI.

Based on the quantity of seized contraband and the arrest, HSI special agents were contacted to continue the investigation. Based on the findings during the traffic stop and the subsequent investigation conducted by HSI special agents, a state search warrant was secured and executed at Leon-Camberos’ residence near Amarely Avenue that resulted in the additional seizure of 432.22 lbs. of methamphetamine, one AR-15 style rifle and one magazine, 14.88 lbs. of marijuana to include THC vape pens and approximately $15,295 in cash.

The defendant was presented and charged with multiple Arizona state drug charges including importation/transportation of dangerous drugs, misconduct involving weapons, and possession of narcotics for sale.

U.S. District Court Judge Laurie Smith Camp sentenced Sebastian Velasquez-Ramos, 47, to 28 months in federal prison following his criminal convictions for fraudulently using a Social Security card, falsely claiming U.S. citizenship, and aggravated identity theft. Velasquez-Ramos previously pleaded guilty to the charges.

An investigation determined that in 2017, Velasquez-Ramos used a false social security number, and he falsely claimed that he was a U.S. citizen to obtain employment at an Omaha company.

Velasquez-Ramos is also currently serving a separate prison sentence following a state conviction for leaving the scene of a fatal multi-vehicle crash. In April 2018, Velasquez-Ramos fatally hit a motorcyclist in Omaha and left the scene of the crash.

The 28-month federal sentence is to be served consecutively to the state sentence Velasquez-Ramos is now serving. In addition to his federal prison sentence, he must also complete three years of supervised release. There is no parole in the federal prison system.

Opioid manufacturer Insys Therapeutics agreed to a global resolution to settle the government’s separate criminal and civil investigations, the Department of Justice announced today.

As part of the criminal resolution, Insys will enter into a deferred prosecution agreement with the government, Insys’s operating subsidiary will plead guilty to five counts of mail fraud, and the company will pay a $2 million fine and $28 million in forfeiture.

As part of the civil resolution, Insys agreed to pay $195 million to settle allegations that it violated the False Claims Act. Both the criminal and civil investigations stemmed from Insys’s payment of kickbacks and other unlawful marketing practices in connection with the marketing of Subsys.

Insys’s drug Subsys is a sublingual fentanyl spray, a powerful, but highly addictive, opioid painkiller. In 2012, Subsys was approved by the Food and Drug Administration for the treatment of persistent breakthrough pain in adult cancer patients who are already receiving, and tolerant to, around-the-clock opioid therapy.

Following the recent arrest of two unlawfully present teens suspected in the violent murder of a young girl in Maryland, ICE officers in Baltimore are again seeking to take custody of the illegal aliens through the ICE detainer process following the Prince George’s County Detention Center’s (PGCDC) failure to cooperate.

Josue Rafael Fuentes-Ponce and Joel Ernesto Escobar, both Salvadoran nationals, were previously arrested on May 11, 2018 when they were arrested by Prince George’s County Police Department (PGCPD) for attempted first-degree murder, attempted second-degree murder, participation in gang activity, conspiracy to commit murder, attempted robbery, and other related charges.

“As law enforcement officers, we must continue to serve and protect the American public and act in the interest of public safety first,” said Baltimore Field Office Director Diane Witte.

 “These individuals had demonstrated violent criminal behavior before, and because they were released in spite of the lawful detainer, they were afforded an opportunity to take a life.”

ICE officers have again lodged detainers with PGCDC and will again seek to take custody of these public safety threats pending the outcome of their criminal proceedings

President Trump’s had cranked up its campaign against Iran in recent months, raising concerns that the United States and Iran are on a path to war, an observation supported by a recent Reuters/Ipsos poll, indicating that 64% percent of Americans, including a large majority of Republicans, support the 2015 deal designed to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons in exchange for sanctions relief, with 51% of respondents indicating that the United States and Iran would go to war within the next few years, up 8 percentage points from a poll last June.

Iran is a suspect of sabotaging oil tankers off the coast of the United Arab Emirates and Yemen’s Iranian-aligned, as Houthi rebels have carried out drone attacks on Saudi oil pumping stations amid US intelligence warnings that Iran or Iran-backed groups could threaten US interests.

Nearly half of all Americans disapprove of how Trump is handling relations with Iran,  with 31% saying they strongly disapprove, overall, 39% approve of Trump’s policy, yet at the same time, 54% of Americans view Iran as a “serious” or “imminent” threat.

“I’m pleased to announce that we’ve just reached an agreement with Canada and Mexico, and we’ll be selling our product into those countries without the imposition of tariffs, or major tariffs,” Mr. Trump said in a speech to the National Association of Realtors.   

US and Canada agreed to work to prevent cheap imports of steel and aluminum from entering North America, but the new trade deal needs approval from legislatures in the US, Canada and Mexico, while the Washington hawks are urging Mr Trump to get tougher on tariffs with China.

By removing the metals tariffs on Canada and Mexico, Mr Trump cleared a key hurdle to a North American trade pact his team negotiated last year.

In imposing the metals tariffs and threatening the ones on autos, the President was relying on a rarely used weapon in the US trade war arsenal – Section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act of 1962 – which lets a president impose tariffs on imports if the Commerce Department deems them a threat to national security.

ICE officers with the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO) Baltimore Field Office concluded a four-day surge enforcement action netting 12 arrests, with all individuals arrested for violating U.S. immigration laws in accordance with the Immigration and Nationality Act. Those targeted for arrest had been issued final orders of removal within the past five years and had criminal histories or pending criminal charges.

“Today’s announcement reflects the agency’s commitment to enforcing our immigration laws in an orderly and logical manner as we experience increasing strain on our limited resources,” said Baltimore Field Office Director (FOD) Diane Witte.

“The illegal aliens targeted for arrest today came to the attention of our fugitive operations teams by way of the criminal justice system, and by nature of their outstanding orders of removal.”

The arrestees (11 men, one woman) included nationals from the following six countries: El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Kenya, Mexico and Zimbabwe.

ICE conducts targeted immigration enforcement in compliance with federal law and agency policy.

US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) arrested 13 immigration violators in New Jersey during a 4-day surge effort that targeted aliens who have been issued a final order of removal in the past five years, have failed to depart the United States, and have received criminal convictions or have pending criminal charges.

 “The vast majority of the individuals targeted in this effort have criminal offenses in addition to their immigration violations, making them among the highest priority for enforcement,” ICE  said.

 Those who have outstanding orders of removal, or who returned to the United States illegally after being removed, are generally subject to immediate removal from the country.

In FY2018, ERO arrested 158,581 aliens, 90% of whom had criminal convictions (66%), pending criminal charges (21%), or previously issued final orders of removal (3%).

“As this operation clearly demonstrates, ICE continues to focus its efforts first on public safety threats,” said ERO Newark Field Office Director John Tsoukaris.
