FBI Phoenix Field Office announced that on July 26, two men, identified as  Mahad Mohamed and Abdi Yemani Hussein, were arrested for supporting a designated foreign terrorist organization.

 These communications revealed the defendants’ desire to travel overseas in order to fight on behalf of ISIS or to conduct an attack within the United States if they were unable to travel.

    According to the criminal complaint, the defendants had been in communication with an FBI undercover employee whom they believed was a supporter of ISIS ideology.

  Ultimately, the defendants purchased airline tickets to travel to Egypt, with the intention to travel on to Sinai and join ISIS.

  FBI agents arrested Mohamed and Hussein after they checked in for their flight at the Tucson International Airport in Arizona.

A Chinese businesswoman was indicted by a federal grand jury Thursday on fraud charges for allegedly providing false verifications of employment for Chinese nationals seeking to stay in the United States on student and work visas.

Weiyun Huang, also known as “Kelly Huang,” 30, of Beijing, China, is charged with one count of conspiracy to commit visa fraud and five counts of visa fraud, according to an indictment returned July 25 in US District Court in Chicago.

 Huang has been in federal custody since March after her arrest in the Northern District of California.

When a prison riot broke out on in the northern Brazilian state of Para, fighting left at least 52 inmates dead, with 16 of them decapitated, as State authorities tried to quell the carnage that began at about 7:00am in the city of Altamira and involved two prison gangs.

Prisoners of the Comando Class A gang set fire to a cell containing inmates who belonged to the Comando Vermelho, or Red Command gang, Para’s State Government said in a statement.

The Red Command gang hails from Rio de Janeiro, but has expanded deep into the north and north-east of Brazil as it seeks to diversify its income stream.

Two guards were taken hostage as the groups battled one another, but they were later released.

Kari Scattaglia, 40, of Sylmar, was sentenced to two years and eight months in prison for a conspiracy to take bribes to provide Class A commercial driver licenses without the buyer having to take or pass the required tests.

She and another former DMV employee co-defendant Lisa Terraciano, 52, of North Hollywood, pleaded guilty, Nov. 3, 2017, to a conspiracy to commit bribery, to commit identity fraud, and to commit unauthorized access of a computer.

Scattaglia caused at least 68 fraudulent CDLs, including permits, to be issued, and Terraciano caused at least 148 fraudulent CDLs, including permits, to be issued.

Terraciano faces a maximum statutory penalty of five years in prison and a $250,000 fine.

“Individuals in positions of trust who exploit federal and state law for personal gain pose a significant threat to public safety and national security,” said Jerry C. Templet Jr, Deputy Special Agent in Charge, Homeland Security Investigations.”

A six-year-old boy and a 13-year-old girl were among the three people killed in a shooting at a food festival in California, and fifteen were injured when the suspect, identified  by police as Santino William Legan, 19, opened fire at the Gilroy Garlic Festival with an assault weapon.

The gunman was shot dead by police, and an accomplice is being sought, as six-year-old Stephen Romero is the first of the dead to be identified, and his mother and grandmother were wounded.

Gilroy police chief Scott Smithee said during a news conference on Monday that the officers who were deployed at the event were able to respond within a minute.

“It seems like this was a random act,” said Chief Smithee, with his voice cracking with emotion.
