CNN has been a frequent target of Trump’s furor against media outlets, which he calls “fake news” and “the enemy of the people” had a winning day in court when a federal judge in Washington ordered the Trump’s administration to immediately return the White House credential for CNN’s Jim Acosta.

“I want to thank all of my colleagues in the press who supported us this week,” Acosta said outside of the federal courthouse shortly after U.S. District Court Judge Timothy Kelly issued his decision. “Let’s get back to work.” CNN is suing on the basis that Acosta’s constitutional rights were allegedly violated by the White House when it suspended his credential indefinitely. At issue in CNN’s suit are the First and Fifth Amendments of the U.S. Constitution, which guarantee a free press and due process respectively. The Trump administration has argued it has “broad discretion” in granting White House access to journalists covering the president as it sought to justify the removal of Acosta’s credential following a heated exchange with Trump.

Around 2,000 migrants that are part of a more massive 7,000-strong caravan have reached the region of the Mexican city of Tijuana bordering the U.S., exceeding its capacity to host only 700 people and forcing the authorities to open a stadium and a sports complex for the use. The migrants are expected to wait at the border for days as U.S. officials can handle around 100 migrant applications daily, with about 2300 children among the migrant’s crowd. U.S. President Donald Trump has been very vocal about the caravan, calling it an “invasion” and saying the military will meet it.

“Many Gang Members and some evil people are mixed into the Caravan heading to our Southern Border. Please go back. You will not be admitted into the United States unless you go through the legal process. This is an invasion of our Country, and our Military is waiting for you!” he tweeted.

The caravan is comprised of around 3,500 people as it draws near the U.S. border. While beginning in Honduras, it reached a peak of 7,000 people as many from other Central American nations joined in the 1,553-mile (2,500-kilometer) journey to reach the U.S. by foot. The caravan mostly consists of Hondurans who are fleeing from violence and poverty in their home country. On Monday, U.S. Customs and Border Protection announced they would be closing multiple lanes at their ports of entry in anticipation of the migrant caravans.

Customs and Border Protection (CBP) said it would close lanes at the San Ysidro and Otay Mesa crossings from Tijuana into California to allow the Department of Defence to install barbed wire and position barricades and fencing at the country’s southern border, as hundreds of Central American migrants planning to seek asylum in the country reached one of Mexico’s northern-most cities.

Human rights organizations said larger groups were scheduled to arrive in the coming days, as DOD Jim Mattis said he would inspect the area, which would be his first visit since the military announced that over 7,000 US troops would go to the city as the caravan of mostly Hondurans made its way through Mexico.

The death toll in wildfires in the state of California rose to 50, with the Camp Fire surpassing state records, becoming the most deadly and most destructive fire the state has ever seen by burning 130,000 acres, at least 8,800 structures and killing 48 people.

“This the deadliest fire in the wildland fire history of the United States,” said Butte County Sheriff Kory Honea at a news conference.

Two people were also killed in the Woolsey Fire in southern California as it tore through the affluent neighborhoods of Malibu and burned more than 97,000 acres and destroyed at least 435 structures. Repopulation notices were given to some residents in the areas affected by the fire. However, they may not have homes to return to.

With today’s guilty verdict, he will be held accountable for his brutal knife attack on an airport police officer in Flint,” said Assistant Attorney General Demers. “I want to thank the prosecutors and law enforcement partners who made this result possible. The National Security Division remains committed to holding accountable all who seek to carry out terrorist attacks on our soil and target our men and women in uniform.” According to evidence presented at trial, Ftouhi entered the United States from Canada on a “mission” to kill American police officers in the United States. Before entering the United States on June 16, 2017, while in Canada, Ftouhi conducted online research of American gun laws and for gun shows in Michigan. Ftouhi subsequently traveled to Michigan where he was unsuccessful in repeated attempts to purchase a gun and purchased a knife instead. On June 20, 2017, Ftouhi walked up to the victim, who is a lieutenant with the Flint Bishop Airport police and was in full uniform, and stabbed the police officer in the neck twice with a knife. Ftouhi referenced killings in Syria, Iraq, and Afghanistan, and yelled “Allahu Akbar.” After his arrest, Ftouhi told law enforcement that he was a “soldier of Allah,” subscribed to the ideology of Al Qaeda and Usama bin Laden and that he had planned to kill the victim, steal his gun, and kill other police officers in the airport.

They are also despicable violations of our core values as Americans,” Acting Attorney General Matthew Whitaker said in response to an FBI report that hates crimes across the U.S. rose by 17% in 2017.

More than half of the 7,175 hate crimes reported to the FBI by law enforcement agencies nationwide for the 2017 calendar year involved acts against individuals such as assault or intimidation, while 3,000 were attacks against property including vandalism, or robbery. In some instances, there was overlap in the two categories.

Nearly two-thirds — 59.6 percent — of the victims in 2017 were targeted based on their race, ethnicity or ancestry. Roughly 20 percent of victims were targeted because of their religion while about 15 percent were victimized based on their sexual orientation.

In all, last year saw a 58.1 percent increase in anti-Semitic incidents and an 18.6 increase in Islamophobic attacks. (Anadolu)
