A  judge found Johnson & Johnson and its subsidiaries helped fuel Oklahoma’s opioid crisis, ordering the consumer products giant to pay $US572 million to clean up the problem.

The Pharmacy giant has a contract with poppy growers in Tasmania who produce a lot of the raw opium used to make company’s drugs, with Cleveland County District Judge Thad Balkman’s ruling followed the first state opioid case to make it to trial and could help shape negotiations over roughly 1,500 similar lawsuits filed by state, local and tribal governments consolidated before a federal US judge in Ohio.

“The opioid crisis has ravaged the state of Oklahoma,” Mr. Balkman said before announcing the verdict

 “It must be abated immediately.“

The companies are expected to appeal against the ruling to the Oklahoma Supreme Court with one of its lawyers, Sabrina Strong, calling the judge’s decision “flawed”.

  1. Legislative changes are the only viable option to swiftly put an end to the current crisis, reducing the victimization of migrants looking for a better life, and starving the cartels and the transnational criminal organizations of a major segment of their illicit enterprises

     2.  Amend the Trafficking Victims Protection Reauthorization Act (TVPRA) to provide for the prompt repatriation of any Unaccompanied Alien Children (UACs) who are not victims of human trafficking and who do not express a fear of return to their home country and provide for similar treatment of all UACs from both contiguous or noncontiguous countries to ensure they are swiftly and safely returned to their countries of origin.

     3. Comparing FY 2019 year-to-date1 with FY 2018 year-to-date, there has been a 79% percent increase (184,461 to 330,049) in intakes resulting from CBP apprehensions and an almost 11 percent decrease (121,095 to 107,923) in intakes resulting from ICE arrests.

     4. Of the small fraction of the current detained population that was not apprehended by CBP and do not have a criminal history, many are foreign fugitives, known or suspected gang members, or have violated the terms of their enrollment in ICE’s ATD program.

     5. Terminate the Flores Settlement agreement and clarify the government’s detention authority with respect to alien minors, including minors detained as part of a family unit.

US Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s (ICE) Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO) removed Melvin Armando Cortez-Moreno, an active member of the 18th Street Gang, to his home country of El Salvador where local authorities took him into custody.

 However, Cortez-Moreno later received an order for removal, June 14, 2017, to El Salvador issued by a San Francisco immigration judge because he failed to appear for his immigration court proceedings.

Cortez-Moreno, 30, is wanted by the Salvadoran government for multiple egregious crimes, including charges of manslaughter, murder and other crimes with ties to 18th Street Gang activity.

 That day, ERO San Francisco arrested Cortez-Moreno outside of the Sacramento County Jail and took him into ICE custody pending immigration removal proceedings.

 However, the US Border Patrol (USBP) first encountered him June 11, 2015, near South Komelik, Arizona, and arrested him for immigration law violations.

China’s total rare earths processing capacity stands at 220,000 tonnes, and for Australia to match China’s 2018 rare earths production, it would need to increase production by 500 per cent, but China is threatening to strangle global supplies in retaliation for tariffs imposed on imports into the United States amid its escalating trade war with President Donald Trump.

Last week, after President Xi Jinping visited a rare earths processing facility, China’s National Development and Reform Commission — Beijing’s guiding economic agency — quoted an unnamed official questioning whether the rare earths trade could be China’s “counter-weapon” against the US.

“If [supply was to constrict] it will cause chaos and mayhem in the US industrial ecosystem, similar in scale to the Huawei bans,” Dr Wilson said, referring to the US trade embargo on the Chinese tech giant.

For Dr. Wilson, this unfolding situation serves as an opportune reminder about the need for countries and manufacturers to get “real” about their economies and diversifying their resource suppliers.

This would have a profound effect on the US, according to Dr. Jeffrey Wilson, an expert in international resource politics at Murdoch University.
