The Department of Justice announced today that the Department’s Antitrust Division is reviewing whether and how market-leading online platforms have achieved market power and are engaging in practices that have reduced competition, stifled innovation, or otherwise harmed consumers.
The Department’s review will consider the widespread concerns that consumers, businesses, and entrepreneurs have expressed about search, social media, and some retail services online. The Department’s Antitrust Division is conferring with and seeking information from the public, including industry participants who have direct insight into competition in online platforms, as well as others.
“Without the discipline of meaningful market-based competition, digital platforms may act in ways that are not responsive to consumer demands,” said Assistant Attorney General Makan Delrahim of the Antitrust Division.
“The Department’s antitrust review will explore these important issues.”

The Department of Justice, together with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), today announced a settlement that requires Facebook to implement a comprehensive, multi-faceted set of compliance measures designed to improve user privacy and provide additional protections for user information.
“The Department of Justice is committed to protecting consumer data privacy and ensuring that social media companies like Facebook do not mislead individuals about the use of their personal information,” said Assistant Attorney General Jody Hunt for the Department of Justice’s Civil Division
As reflected in the stipulated order filed with the complaint, Facebook has agreed to settle these allegations by paying a $5 billion civil penalty and implementing robust, new compliance measures that will change how Facebook prioritizes and approaches user privacy issues.
In a complaint filed today, the United States alleges that Facebook violated an administrative order issued by the FTC in 2012 by misleading users about the extent to which third-party application developers could access users’ personal information.

During his public appearance Robert Mueller said he didn’t want or need to testify before Congress on the results of his investigation, but now after the DOJ issued guidelines that set boundaries on Mr. Mueller’s testimony, instructing him to stay within the confines of the written report, Democratic Trump haters had to pick and choose what episodes and findings they wanted to highlight, in the hopes that he would offer affirmation or further corroboration. He frequently did, but usually in the least dramatic fashion imaginable.
His answers to a question about the president asking White House staff to falsify documents relevant to the investigation, for instance, was simply: “I would say that’s generally a summary”, or ‘I’ll refer you to the report’, or “I can’t answer that question”, “I can’t get into that”, “I don’t recall”, “that’s out of my purview” .
In other words, yet another miserable failure by the “Impeach 45” crowd to realize their dream to nullify the voice of the American people, and remove a democratically elected president from office.
