1…………> Cartel Mule Arrested: Mexico

A large haul of cash was among three seizures made by authorities in Baja California this week as Federal Police arrested a man who was unable to produce documentation confirming the origin of a shipment which, upon further inspection, consisted of 31 sacks containing cash in various denominations to retrieve a shipment of US $10 million that had arrived by plane at Tijuana International Airport.

In another search in the same airport, a police canine unit raised the alarm over a piece of luggage that on the first inspection appeared to be boxes of antacid and painkiller medications, that in fact turned out to be 295 fentanyl pills, while the other boxes, purportedly painkillers, contained controlled substances.

2…………> Jalisco vs Zetas: Bloody Feud

Puebla gangster Roberto “El Bukanas” de los Santos de Jesús, a soldier of the Zetas cartel, had gained control of the so-called Red Triangle region of the state whose big attraction is the important Minatitlán-Mexico City fuel pipeline.

But the fight for the profitable fuel theft business from the states of Veracruz and Tamaulipas ignited the inevitable violence between the gangs and their leaders, leading to shootouts between huachicoleros, aka fuel thieves, in which 12 people were killed, including gang leader Jesús “El Kalimba” Martín Mirón, the victim of an internal quarrel. He was sought not only by the authorities but by his own gang, the CJNG, and was reportedly in the process of altering his face and removing his fingerprints through plastic surgery.

Martín’s death triggered a series of executions throughout the state, despite the deployment of a 600-strong force by the Army and the Navy.

3…………> DACA Is Dead: Trump

President Trump reasserted his opposition to legalizing the status of hundreds of thousands of undocumented immigrants brought to the United States as children, aka “Dreamers” by declaring that the Republicans should “go to Nuclear Option to pass tough laws [on illegal migrants] NOW”, and accused Mexico of doing “very little, if not NOTHING”, to stop migrants crossing its northern border.

Mr. Trump’s tweets referred to “caravans” coming, a possible reference to a caravan of more than 1,000 migrants, mostly Hondurans with their families, traveling together through Mexico to try to protect themselves against criminal gangs and harassment on their way to claim asylum once they reach the US border.

Mr. Trump’s tweets were met with scorn on Tweeter, including criticism from his former rival for the Republican presidential nomination, Ohio Gov. John “Pothole”  Kasich.

5…………> Living Planet: The Mekong under threat

The Mekong is the longest river in South-East Asia. Over 70 million people, living in six different countries, depend on this river for their livelihoods. But development is putting the ecosystem here under threat. Sand mines and hydro-electric power stations are changing the water quality, blocking fish migration routes and crippling the stability of the river banks.
