On Feb. 28, 2019 approximately 3,200 lbs. of cocaine, with an estimated street value of $77,000,000, was seized at the Port of New York/Newark in a joint operation involving U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s (ICE) Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), US Customs and Border Protection (CBP), Joint Task Force East (JTF-E), the US Coast Guard (USCG), the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), the New York Police Department (NYPD), and the New York State Police (NYSP).

An examination of a shipping container entering the United States revealed 60 packages containing a white powdery substance that field-tested positive for cocaine.  This apprehension is the second largest cocaine seizure at the Port of New York/Newark, and the largest in nearly 25 years.

“Cocaine, New York’s nemesis of the 90s, is back-indicating traffickers push to build an emerging customer base of users mixing cocaine with fentanyl,” said DEA Special Agent in Charge Ray Donovan.

  “This record-breaking seizure draws attention to this new threat and shows law enforcement’s collaborative efforts in seizing illicit drugs before it gets to the streets and into users’ hands”.

“Transnational Criminal Organizations rely upon illicit networks throughout the world to supply, transport, and distribute cocaine and other dangerous drugs,” said Brian Michael, Special Agent in Charge, HSI Newark.

  “HSI’s Border Enforcement Security Task Force in Newark, comprised of CBP, Waterfront Commission of NY Harbor Police, Hudson County Sheriff’s Office, Port Authority Police Department, and Dover Police Department worked together to make this operation a success”.

    In Fiscal Year 2018, the New York field office made more than 3,400 arrests in their area of responsibility (southernmost 14 counties of New York State) – approximately 87 percent of those individuals either had a prior criminal conviction or had criminal charges pending, pursuant to their arrest by a law enforcement agency.

    During the month of February 2019, ICE’s Enforcement and Removal’s (ERO) deportation officers assigned to the New York Field Office arrested more than 20 criminal aliens throughout their area of responsibility, after they were released from local law enforcement custody with an active immigration detainer in place.

     In a region with a population of approximately 8-10 million residents, these statistics clearly illustrate that ERO New York prioritizes its daily targeted enforcement efforts, on criminals and public safety threats.

    The boy had slipped off the chairlift and was dangling 18 feet above the ground, as a group of rescuers used out-of-bounds fencing to create a makeshift net to catch him, with the boy left uninjured, and the five teens and two adults hailed as heroes.

    As other bystanders watched, James MacDonald, a 14-year-old asked a man to retrieve some orange netting being used to fence out-of-bounds areas, and he, some friends and other bystanders stretched it out as a makeshift net underneath the boy.

    Meanwhile, 13-year-old Ethan Harvey said another of their friends urged the boy to stay calm, directed him to remove his skis, and then asked the father to trust the group of young rescuers.

    Islamic May’sdom of UK counter-terror police are investigating three packages containing explosives found at Heathrow Airport, London City Airport and Waterloo station.

    “These devices, at this early stage of the investigation, appear capable of igniting an initially small fire when opened. The packages, all A4sized white postal bags containing yellow Jiffy bags, have been assessed by specialist officers to be small improvised explosive device,” the Metro police said.

    “We believe that every victim was in the residence when it hit. They all ended up, with the exception of two, outside the residence,” Mr. Harris told reporters, adding that seven members of one family were among the victims.

A Brooklyn, New York, resident named Bamgbala pleaded guilty to 42 counts of an indictment charging him with 18 counts of wire fraud, 22 counts of aggravated identity theft, one count of conspiring to commit aggravated identity theft, and one count of aiding and assisting the filing of a false tax return, according to Principal Deputy Assistant Attorney General Richard E. Zuckerman of the Justice Department’s Tax Division and US Attorney Richard P. Donoghue for the Eastern District of New York.

According to court documents, Bamgbala, the owner of Kaybamz Inc, a tax preparation business located in Brooklyn, New York, used stolen Social Security Numbers to file false tax returns with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) to obtain fraudulent refunds, as the superseding indictment also alleges that Bamgbala and others conspired to deposit the unlawfully obtained tax refund checks into a specified bank account to obtain the cash value of those checks, and created fraudulent IRS forms and New York State identification documents to facilitate the scheme.

Bamgbala faces a mandatory minimum sentence of two years in prison for each count of aggravated identity theft, a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison for each count of wire fraud, a maximum sentence of five years in prison for each conspiracy count, and a maximum sentence of three years in prison for the aiding and assisting in the filing of a false tax return count.

 He also faces a period of supervised release, restitution, forfeiture and monetary penalties.
